Materials

Common plastics for custom parts.

If the material is undecided, choose Not sure on the quote. We will recommend one for the job.

These notes are general. Properties vary by grade and by the design, and the material is confirmed on the quote.

Common plastics with strengths, uses, heat, flex, and outdoor notes
MaterialStrengthsTypical usesHeatFlexOutdoor
PLAAccurate and rigid, with good fine detail.Fit checks, jigs, models, and parts that remain indoors.Softens in a hot vehicle or near a heat source.Stiff. It can fracture rather than bend.Unsuitable outdoors. Sunlight and heat degrade it.
PETGTougher than PLA, with limited flex and light chemical resistance.Clips, brackets, covers, and parts that are handled.Higher than PLA. Not for high-heat service.Limited spring. It is not an elastomer.Acceptable for covered or mild outdoor use.
ABS / ASATough, with higher heat tolerance. ASA resists sunlight better than ABS.Enclosures near warmth. ASA when the part is outdoors.Higher service temperature than PLA or PETG.Stiff.ASA for sunlight. ABS is better kept indoors.
TPUFlexible, and able to absorb impact.Grips, bumpers, gaskets, and protective covers.Moderate. It will not stay firm in high heat.Bends and returns.Depends on the grade. State outdoor exposure on the quote.
Nylon / carbon fiberStrong and wear-resistant. Carbon-filled nylon is the stiffer option.Brackets, gears, and clips that carry a load.Higher heat resistance than the everyday plastics above.Unfilled nylon can flex. Carbon-filled nylon is more rigid.More durable than PLA. State sun, water, and load on the quote.
